Fundamentals covers the positions that every jiu-jitsu match and every self-defense situation comes back to: mount, side control, guard and the back. You learn how to get there, how to hold it, and most importantly how to escape when you're stuck underneath.

The pace is slower than the regular classes and there's more time for questions. If you're worried about being out of shape or getting hurt, this is the class that answers both. You'll move and you'll sweat, and nothing happens that you don't control.

Once Tuesday feels comfortable, add Monday and Wednesday gi classes or Thursday no-gi. Keep coming to Fundamentals for as long as it helps. There's no graduation, and the basics never stop mattering.

How a class runs

  1. Warm-up

Simple jiu-jitsu movements that double as the building blocks of escapes.

  2. One position, step by step

The coach breaks down a single position into small, clear pieces.

  3. Escape and control reps

You practice both sides: holding the position and getting out of it.

  4. Guided rounds

Short rounds that start from the position you learned, at a pace that suits beginners.

BJJ Fundamentals questions

Is Fundamentals really for people with zero experience?

Yes. It's built for your very first class. No experience or fitness level is required.

Will I have to spar on my first night?

Rounds at the end are guided and start from the position you just learned. Tell your coach it's your first class and they'll set your pace.

Can I come to other classes while I'm in Fundamentals?

Yes. During your free week and after, you can take any class on the schedule. Fundamentals simply makes the other classes easier to follow.

What happens when I arrive for my first class?

Come ten minutes early. You'll fill out a quick waiver, get fitted for a loaner gi if you need one, and meet your coach before class starts.
